Why your address matters to insurers more than you think
For auto insurance, your address determines where your vehicle is "garaged" overnight β which is one of the primary inputs in premium calculation. Moving to a different zip code, even within the same city, can raise or lower your premium significantly. A move from a high-crime urban area to a lower-risk suburb might reduce your premium. The reverse is also true.
More importantly: driving with an address on your policy that doesn't match where you actually live raises a material misrepresentation concern. In a collision, your insurer may investigate whether the risk was accurately represented at the time of policy issuance. This is not theoretical β it has resulted in claim denials.
Auto insurance β update before or immediately after moving
Call your auto insurer or update online as soon as you have your new address. Ask them to re-rate your policy at the new address so your premium reflects your actual risk profile. If your new address results in a premium increase, this is the correct legal outcome β not a mistake.
If you are moving to a new state, auto insurance requirements may differ. Minimum liability limits, uninsured motorist coverage requirements, and no-fault rules vary by state. You may need to update your policy terms β not just your address.
Homeowner's insurance β must match the insured property
If you are buying a new home, your homeowner's policy must be in force and covering the new address from the day you take ownership (required by your lender at closing). If you are selling your old home and buying a new one, you need to coordinate the cancellation of the old policy and activation of the new one around closing dates.
If you are renting out your old home instead of selling, you need a landlord policy (not a homeowner's policy) β the coverage is different and your current policy may not cover a rental property.
Renters insurance β cancels when you vacate
Your renters insurance policy covers a specific address. When you move out, the policy should be cancelled (or transferred to your new address if you're renting again). If you buy a home, switch to homeowners insurance and cancel the renters policy. Overpaying for both is a common post-move error.
Life insurance β address update + beneficiary review
Life insurance policy correspondence β including renewal notices, premium invoices, and beneficiary designation updates β goes to the address on file. Contact your insurer directly or update via their online portal. Moving is also a natural time to review your beneficiary designations and make sure they reflect your current wishes.
Health insurance
For employer-sponsored health insurance, update your address through your employer's HR system. For ACA marketplace coverage, update your address at healthcare.gov β moving to a new rating area can change your premium subsidy amount. For Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, contact your plan directly.
