Most "address change checklists" online are 20-item blog posts that list "update Netflix" alongside "notify the DMV" as if they carry the same urgency. They don't. Missing your DMV deadline can result in a $250 fine. Missing Netflix means you get a shipping box at the wrong address once.
This guide organizes everything by urgency tier β what has legal deadlines, what has financial consequences, and what can wait. Every item links to a dedicated guide with step-by-step instructions.
π΄ Tier 1 β Do these within 10β30 days (legal deadlines or serious consequences)
1. USPS Mail Forwarding
Do this first β even before your move date if possible. File at usps.com/move for $1.10. Mail from your old address forwards for up to 12 months. This is your safety net while all other address changes are in progress.
2. State DMV β Driver's License
Every U.S. state requires you to update your driver's license address within a specific window after moving. California: 10 days. Texas: 30 days. Georgia: 60 days. Penalties range from $25 citations to $250 fines. This is a legal requirement, not a suggestion. Find your state's deadline β
3. State DMV β Vehicle Registration
Separate from your license, though often updated at the same time. Your vehicle registration must reflect your current address. In most states, the deadlines are the same as the license update. State-by-state guide β
4. Auto Insurance
Your address determines how your auto premium is calculated. Driving with an incorrect address on file creates a potential coverage issue in a claim. Notify your insurer within a week of moving β your premium may change by zip code.
5. Voter Registration
Moving to a new address β especially a new county β changes your polling place and your representation. Most states require re-registration 15β30 days before an election. If an election is coming, this is time-sensitive. State voter registration deadlines β
6. Social Security Administration (if receiving benefits)
SSI recipients are legally required to report a move. All other SSA benefit recipients should update promptly to ensure payment mail reaches them. SSA update guide β
7. Employer / HR / Payroll
Your W-2 is mailed to the address in your employer's HR system. If you move and don't update before year-end, your W-2 goes to the old address. Update HR records within the first week. Most HR portals (Workday, ADP, Gusto) allow self-service address updates.
π‘ Tier 2 β Within 30 days (financial and coverage consequences)
8. All Banks and Credit Unions
Statements, new card deliveries, and fraud alert correspondence go to the address on file. Update each institution individually β most offer online address changes. Bank update guide β
9. Credit Cards
Each credit card issuer is separate from your bank. Log in to each card's online account or call the number on the back of the card. Replacement cards, statements, and fraud notices all go to your billing address.
10. Investment and Retirement Accounts
Brokerage accounts, 401(k) plan administrators, IRA custodians, and pension administrators all need your current address. Tax documents (1099-R, 1099-B) are mailed year-end. Investment account guide β
11. Homeowner's or Renter's Insurance
If you're moving to a new home, you need a new homeowner's policy (or updated renter's policy). Your current policy covers your current address β it does not automatically transfer. Contact your insurer before your move date. Insurance address change guide β
12. Life Insurance
Life insurance policies communicate via mail β especially important for premium notices and beneficiary correspondence. Update your address with your insurer and review your beneficiary designations while you're at it.
13. Health Insurance
If you have employer-sponsored health insurance, your HR update typically covers this. For marketplace/ACA coverage, log into healthcare.gov to update your address β this can affect your subsidy amount if you moved to a different rating area. For Medicare Advantage, update with your plan separately.
14. IRS β Federal Taxes
File Form 8822 if you're expecting a refund or IRS correspondence before your next return. Otherwise, updating your address on your next tax return is sufficient. Full IRS guide β
15. State Tax Agency
Each state's tax agency is separate from the IRS. Most states update automatically when you file your next state return, but if you receive quarterly refunds or notices, update proactively via your state's revenue agency website.
16. Healthcare Providers and Pharmacy
Your primary care physician, specialists, dentist, and pharmacy all have your address on file for appointment reminders, billing, and prescription notifications. Update each directly.
17. Passport (optional but recommended)
The U.S. Passport Agency does not require you to update your address between renewals. However, it's good practice to keep your address current in your passport records if you travel internationally. You can update via DS-5504 at no cost if your passport is less than a year old.
π’ Tier 3 β When convenient (no deadlines, but worth doing)
18. Amazon and Major Online Retailers
Update your default shipping address on Amazon, Walmart, Target, eBay, Etsy, and any other platform you order from regularly. One package delivered to your old address is a clear reminder you forgot this step.
19. Streaming Services
Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Spotify, Apple TV+ and others have your billing address on file. While this rarely affects delivery of the service, billing address mismatches can cause declined payments when your card renews.
20. Subscriptions and Delivery Services
Magazine subscriptions, meal kit deliveries (HelloFresh, Blue Apron), Amazon Subscribe & Save, wine clubs, and similar services ship physical goods to your address. Update before your next scheduled delivery.
21. Loyalty and Rewards Programs
Airlines (frequent flyer programs), hotels, grocery store loyalty programs, and retailer rewards accounts all have address fields. These rarely affect your points or rewards, but physical vouchers and promotional mail will go astray.
22. Professional Licenses and Certifications
If you hold a professional license (real estate, nursing, contractor, CPA, attorney bar membership, etc.), your licensing board needs your current address for renewal notices. Missed renewal notices due to wrong address have resulted in unintentional license lapses.
23. Memberships (Gym, Costco, AAA, etc.)
Membership cards and renewal notices are mailed to the address on file. Update when you have a spare moment.
24. Estate Documents
This is a good time to review and update your will, trust, power of attorney, and healthcare directive β not to change the content, but to note your new address and review whether your designated contacts are still current. Moving states may require updating these documents to comply with state-specific requirements.
25. LLC or Business Registration
If you own an LLC or other registered business, your registered agent address and business address on file with your state's Secretary of State office may need updating. Most states allow this via online filing with a small fee. Business address change guide β

β Frequently Asked Questions
USPS mail forwarding β before or on move day. It's your safety net for everything else. While all the other updates are in progress, USPS will forward mail from your old address for up to 12 months, giving you time to catch anything you missed. It costs $1.10 and takes 3 minutes at usps.com/move.
Primarily your state DMV (driver's license and vehicle registration). Every state has a legal requirement to update your address within a specific timeframe β usually 10β30 days. SSI recipients are also legally required to report an address change to the SSA. Voter registration has deadline consequences (you may not be able to vote) but isn't technically a "fine" in most states.
It's never "too late" to update your address β but you may have already experienced consequences (missed mail, expired DMV grace period, W-2 to old address). For the DMV, update immediately even if you're past the deadline β voluntarily updating is far better than being cited during a traffic stop. For the IRS and SSA, update now via the methods described in the respective guides. For financial accounts, update each one directly through their portal or customer service line.
