Why voter registration isn't automatic when you move

In most states, moving to a new address β€” even within the same county β€” does not automatically update your voter registration. Your old polling place may show you as an active voter at your old address. If you show up at your new polling place on Election Day without having re-registered, you may be offered a provisional ballot that carries extra verification requirements.

Moving to a new county is especially important to address: county-level races (county commissioner, school board, local ballot measures) are only open to residents of that county. Voting at the wrong address could place your vote in the wrong race entirely.

How to update your voter registration online

All 50 states now offer online voter registration or address changes. The national portal at vote.gov will direct you to your state's official registration system. Most state portals require:

The update takes about 3 minutes and is free in all states.

State registration deadlines

Registration deadlines are measured from Election Day β€” not your move date. Most states require registration 15–30 days before an election. A few states offer same-day registration at the polling place. If an election is coming up, check your state's deadline immediately.

California: does the DMV update carry over?

California has an Automatic Voter Registration system linked to the DMV. When you update your driver's license address at the DMV, you may be automatically offered a voter registration update β€” but you must actively confirm it. Do not assume your voter registration was updated just because you changed your DMV address. Verify at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

You should re-register at your new address and vote there. Voting at your old address when you no longer live there is improper and may constitute voter fraud in some states. If you move close to an election and miss the registration deadline, contact your county election office β€” some states allow provisional ballots or have grace period provisions.

Both require updating your voter registration. A county-to-county move is more consequential because your county-level representatives, school board, and local ballot measures change entirely. An in-county move may only change your precinct and state legislative district. In both cases, re-register at your new address to ensure your polling place is correct.
