VA is completely independent from SSA
One of the most common mistakes veterans make after moving: assuming that because they updated their address with the Social Security Administration, their VA benefits are covered. They are not. The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration are separate federal agencies with separate databases. You must update each one independently.
How to update your VA address online (fastest)
- 1Sign in at va.gov
Go to va.gov and sign in using Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, or My HealtheVet credentials.
- 2Navigate to your profile
Click your name in the top right corner to access your profile settings.
- 3Select "Contact Information"
Update your mailing address and residential address. These may be separate fields โ update both.
- 4Confirm the update
Changes take effect within a few business days. Correspondence, benefit award letters, and other VA mail will be directed to your new address.
By phone or in person
Call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 (MondayโFriday, 8 AMโ9 PM ET) to update your address verbally. Have your full name, Social Security number, and VA file number (if you know it) ready.
You can also visit any VA regional office or VA medical center in person. Staff can update your records on the spot.
VA health care โ separate from benefits address
If you are enrolled in VA health care, your health care facility enrollment may also need to change if you move far enough to access a different VA medical center. Contact your new nearest VA medical center to transfer enrollment, or update your preferred VA facility through your VA.gov profile.
GI Bill housing allowance (Chapter 33)
If you are currently receiving GI Bill benefits, particularly the Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowance, your housing allowance rate is tied to your school's location โ not your home address. However, if you change your mailing address and are using the housing allowance, notify your School Certifying Official (SCO) of your new address as well as updating VA directly.
