10-Day Deadline โ Not 30, Not 60
California has one of the strictest address change deadlines in the country. Under California Vehicle Code ยง14600(a), you must notify the DMV within 10 days of changing your residence. This applies whether you moved across town or across the state.
The quick answer: what do you actually have to do?
You have two options to update your address with the California DMV after moving:
- Online via DMV.ca.gov โ takes about 5 minutes, no appointment, no fee
- In person at a DMV field office โ requires an appointment (book online), bring proof of new address
The majority of Californians can complete this entirely online. You do not need to get a new physical license card immediately โ the DMV sends a paper change-of-address card you keep with your license until your next renewal. Your actual license card is not reprinted unless you're near your renewal date and request it.
What you actually get in the mail
After updating online, California DMV mails you a small paper "Change of Address" card within 2โ3 weeks. You keep this card tucked behind your driver's license. Your physical license card shows your old address until your next renewal โ this is legal and expected.
How to change your address online โ step by step
-
1Go to DMV.ca.gov/portal/change-of-address
The direct link is: dmv.ca.gov/portal/change-of-address. You do not need a MyDMV account to use the basic address change tool.
-
2Enter your driver's license number and date of birth
You'll need your current California DL number (found on your existing license) and your date of birth for identity verification.
-
3Enter your new address
Type your new California residential address. P.O. boxes are not accepted as a residential address for driver's license purposes.
-
4Confirm and submit
Review your information and submit. You'll receive a confirmation number โ save this as your proof of notification. The DMV will also send a confirmation email if you provide one.
-
5Watch for your address card in the mail
Allow 2โ3 weeks. If you don't receive the card, call the DMV at 1-800-777-0133 or log in to MyDMV to verify the update went through.
Does your vehicle registration address also need to change?
Yes โ and the deadline is also 10 days. Your vehicle registration and your driver's license are separate records in California. Updating one does not update the other.
You can update your vehicle registration address at the same time through the DMV's online portal, or by mailing a completed REG 101 form (Notice of Change of Address) to your local DMV office. The vehicle registration update is also free.
County of residence affects your vehicle registration fees
If you moved to a different county, your registration fees may change at your next renewal โ different counties have different regional transportation fees. This is not a penalty; it's how California calculates renewal costs. Budget accordingly.
What happens if you miss the 10-day deadline?
The penalty under California Vehicle Code ยง14600(b) is a fine of up to $250. In practice, enforcement typically happens when you're pulled over for a different reason and the officer sees your license address doesn't match your registration or vehicle insurance address. That mismatch can escalate a routine stop.
More practically: if you're in a collision and your address doesn't match your insurance records, your claim can be complicated. Insurers use your address to calculate premiums โ if you moved to a different zip code and didn't update, your policy may have a coverage question to resolve.
Update within 10 days. It takes 5 minutes online and costs nothing.
Real ID and address changes
If you have a California REAL ID (indicated by a star on the upper right corner of your license), an online address change is sufficient โ you do not need to re-verify your identity or bring new documents. Your REAL ID status is maintained.
If you do not yet have a REAL ID and your license is due for renewal soon, consider combining your address update with a REAL ID upgrade at a DMV office. This requires a single appointment and documents: proof of identity (passport or birth certificate + Social Security card) plus two proofs of California residency at your new address.
Moving from another state to California?
If you recently moved to California from another state, the rules are different. You must obtain a California driver's license within 10 days of establishing residency โ not just update an address. This requires:
- Surrendering your out-of-state license
- Passing a written knowledge test (waived for some out-of-state license holders in good standing)
- Passing a vision test
- Paying the $38 application fee (as of 2025)
- Visiting a DMV office in person โ this cannot be done online for new California residents

Do you need to update USPS separately?
Yes. Updating your California DMV address only updates the DMV's records. It does not forward your mail. File a USPS Change of Address at usps.com/move ($1.10 identity verification fee) to forward mail from your old address for up to 12 months. Do this ideally before your move date.

5 itemsโ Frequently Asked Questions
No โ for most people, the address change can be completed entirely online at DMV.ca.gov in about 5 minutes. You do not need an appointment, and there is no fee. In-person is only required if you cannot verify your identity through the online system, or if you're new to California and need to obtain a new license (not just update an address).
Not if you've filed the change of address update within 10 days. California does not immediately reprint your license card โ you receive a paper change-of-address card to carry with your license. Your physical card will show the new address at your next renewal. As long as you filed the update, the old address on the card is not a violation.
Yes. California law requires notification for any change of residence address, including moving to a different unit in the same building. The online process takes 5 minutes and costs nothing, so there's no practical reason to skip it.
The law requires you to update your address at each change. If you're in temporary housing (extended stay hotel, staying with family), the DMV's practical guidance is to update when you establish a semi-permanent address. For very short-term situations (under 30 days), many Californians file a USPS forward only and update the DMV when they land permanently. However, technically the 10-day clock starts at each new address.
In California, if you are already registered to vote, updating your address with the DMV can automatically update your voter registration through the DMV-to-voter-roll integration โ but only if you actively confirm this during the DMV transaction. Do not assume it happened automatically. Verify your voter registration at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov after your move. See our full guide: Voter Registration Address Change.
